Who This Book Is For

This book is for podcast hosts who want to build something that lasts.

It is written for independent creators, business owners, and professionals who care about quality, consistency, and genuine connection, but who are tired of chasing growth hacks, viral moments, or advice that ignores the reality of burnout.

Introduction

Achieving Sustainable Growth as a Podcast Host is a practical, experience-led guide for podcasters who want their show to grow without burning out, chasing trends, or losing the joy that made them start in the first place. Drawing on more than two decades of hands-on podcasting, this book focuses on long-term thinking, strong foundations, and human connection rather than shortcuts or hype. It is written for hosts who want their podcast to last, not just launch.

Across eight chapters, readers are guided through every stage of building a resilient podcast, from clarifying purpose and crafting evergreen content to growing an engaged audience, setting up reliable technology, monetising with integrity, and scaling sensibly. Along the way, the book blends practical advice with real-world examples, reflective prompts, and lessons learned the hard way. The result is a roadmap for podcast hosts who want sustainable growth, creative fulfilment, and a show they are still proud to be making years from now.

About the Author

Mark Hunter is one of Scotland’s earliest podcast pioneers, having launched his first podcast in March 2005. What began as a personal music podcast quickly gained international attention, leading to coverage from the BBC, NPR, The New York Times, and The Sunday Times, as well as support from figures within the global podcasting and broadcasting community.

For more than two decades, Mark has produced thousands of podcast episodes across a wide range of sectors, including business, culture, education, e-commerce, and the public sector. He has worked with organisations as diverse as research charities, independent building societies, schools, trade bodies, and commercial brands, and was later headhunted to run a dedicated podcast production company before moving into broader digital media work.

Mark is known for his uncompromising standards regarding audio quality and storytelling. He believes that great podcasts are built on clarity, consistency, and genuine human connection, not trends or gimmicks. This philosophy has guided his work throughout his career and underpins his approach to sustainable podcast growth.

In 2019 and 2020, Mark returned to podcasting with new experimental and business-focused shows, reigniting his passion for the medium. In 2021, nearly sixteen years after producing his first episode, he co-founded Podcast Studio Glasgow, a professional podcast recording space designed to give creators a high-quality, welcoming environment in which to produce meaningful work.

Today, Mark combines hands-on production experience with strategic insight, helping podcasters and businesses build shows that last. His work focuses on sustainable growth, strong content foundations, and preserving the joy of creating while avoiding burnout.
