Why Consistency is the Most Important Thing in Podcasting
Let me tell you what I've noticed after twenty years of doing this.
The podcasts that last are rarely the most polished. They're not always the wittiest, or the best produced, or the ones with the most impressive guests. The podcasts that last are the ones where the host decided, quietly and without any fanfare, they’re going to keep going.
That's it. That's the secret.
Consistency is the single most important factor in building a podcast audience that stays. Not audio quality. Not topic selection. Not the brilliance of your delivery on any given Tuesday. Those things matter, and they're worth caring about, but none of them can compensate for disappearing.
The eight-episode threshold
Every podcaster I've worked with goes through the same early phase. The first episode is exciting. The second is a relief. By episode five, the initial energy has worn off, and the audience hasn't arrived yet, and you're starting to wonder whether this was a good idea.
Get past episode eight.
That is the first real threshold. The vast majority of podcasts that fail do so before they get there, usually because the host underestimated the work involved, overestimated how quickly an audience would find them, or both. It takes longer than you think, and it requires more from you than you expected, and that combination defeats people before they've really started.
By episode eight, something shifts. You've found your rhythm. You know how long preparation actually takes. You've worked through the initial awkwardness of hearing yourself played back. You have a body of work — small, but real — that a new listener can explore when they find you.
Get past twenty, and the show starts to compound. The back catalogue becomes a discovery engine. New listeners arrive at episode one and listen forward. The algorithm on Spotify and Apple Podcasts begins to understand what you're about and recommends you to the right people. The audience stops feeling like scattered strangers and starts feeling like a tribe.
None of that happens without consistency. You can't skip to episode twenty.
What does consistent actually mean
It doesn't mean weekly. Weekly is excellent if you can genuinely sustain it. Monthly is enough if you can't. What matters is that your listeners know when to expect you, and that you're there when they look.
A monthly podcast published reliably on the first Monday of every month for two years is worth considerably more than a weekly podcast published sporadically for six months and then quietly abandoned. One of them tells the audience something important. The other one just tells them you're gone.
I've seen podcasters tie themselves in knots trying to maintain a weekly schedule they couldn't sustain, burning out by month three and disappearing entirely. Monthly, done properly, fortnightly if you can stretch to it — pick the frequency you can actually hold, and hold it. Regularity matters far more than pace.
What consistency signals
There's a specific thing that a long, unbroken publishing record communicates to a listener that no amount of production quality or brilliant content can replicate on its own.
It says: I'm still here.
It says: I didn't give up when the numbers were small. I take this seriously enough to keep going even when it would have been easy to stop.
For a business podcast, this is worth careful consideration. A prospect who finds you at episode thirty-five and scrolls back through the feed is seeing evidence of commitment, reliability, and follow-through. They are watching you demonstrate the qualities they're looking for in someone they'll trust with a real problem. The podcast didn't just tell them you know your subject. It showed them you see things through.
That's a different and significantly more powerful signal than a single excellent episode from a show that went dark three months later.
The forgiveness factor
Here's something nobody talks about enough. A loyal audience will forgive an imperfect episode. They will not forgive you for vanishing.
If you've been showing up for a year, an episode that doesn't quite land the way you wanted is just an episode. Your listeners have enough context, enough trust in you, enough goodwill built from all the previous episodes, to ride it out and come back next time.
But if your feed goes quiet for six weeks with no explanation, that trust erodes. People who were on the edge of committing drift away. People who were already committed start checking less often. The habit breaks — theirs and yours — and habits are much harder to rebuild than they are to maintain.
Turn up. Even when the episode isn't your best. Even when the numbers are disappointing. Even when nobody seems to be listening yet. The tribe is forming, whether you can see it or not.
The only strategy that compounds
Virality spikes and drops. A great clip runs its course in a few days. A guest appearance on a bigger show gives you a short-term bump that mostly levels out.
Consistency compounds.
Every episode you publish is still there six months from now, being discovered by someone who just found your show and is working their way through the archive. Every month you maintain your schedule is another month of evidence that you're the kind of person worth investing time in. The effect accumulates quietly, invisibly, and then one day you look back and realise you've built something that wouldn't exist if you'd stopped at episode seven.
Get past eight. Get past twenty. Keep going after that.
That is how tribes are built.
